In the 1990s I served on the Concern for Workers Task Force, which was a joint project for the General Board of Church & Society and the General Board of Global Ministries that was mandated by General Conference. Part of our work included the creation of the “United Methodist Workers Rights Manual” which included worship resources that I wrote. This prayer is one of them. –Darren
Leader: Let us prepare for the Gospel feast
by confessing the sins we have committed against God and neighbor:
People: Fierce and Tender God,
whose work is justice and whose delight is mercy:
forgive us for ignoring the cries of the workers
who labor under the tyranny of harassment and poverty.
Free us from the system of greed
that comforts our bodies and cresses our souls.
Free us for a life of joyful resistance
to evil, injustice and oppression
in whatever forms they present themselves;
through Jesus Christ our only Lord. Amen.
Leader: Hear the Good News:
Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
we have been forgiven and freed from sin.
People: Thanks be to God. Alleluia!
